The harbor woke up this morning
and began to breathe, witnessing every
creature movement with its great rocking eye.
The breezes carried it and people cried
we built this city for you!
You’ve been everything to us, our
blanket, our rock, our way out.
The water rolled over the jetties,
the fish spat back at us, an acid menace
developing just below our toes.
Everyone took two steps back and in
a common vision saw ourselves
as seashells, striated and polished
by water’s energy, salt’s abrasion.
