Some of the men were coming back out of the woods.
No one knew what they had done there.
Some of them were taken away in wagons.
There were six roads for these wagons,
no marks on either the wagons or the roads.
Nobody said where they were going, but the men
didn’t see to mind. Some of them were naked,
bruised and fierce-eyed; some of them looked
like they were on their way to work.
Dolores said everybody remembered Arnie
but when she looked through the wagons
she couldn’t find him. She hadn’t seen many
men in her day so she figured maybe she
couldn’t recognize him without his clothes on.
